Otto Waalkes in an interview: “I only went on stage stoned once, that wasn’t a good idea”

Reading time: 7 min.
Otto Waalkes explains what art has in common with diarrhea, how the first Ottifant came into being and who the “girl with a woolly hat” is that he portrayed at the Hamburg Art Academy.
A windy but sunny summer day in Hamburg. Otto Waalkes welcomes us to the offices of his "Ottifant Productions GmbH." On July 22nd, the giant of German solo entertainment turns 77. If I could leave one wish for later, it would be this: to be as lively as Otto at that age. This interview is being conducted on the occasion of his new book, "Kunst in Sicht" ( Art in Sight) (Piper Verlag, 176 pages, €26). It contains Otto-like reinterpretations of masterpieces of art history : Gustav Klimt and Pablo Picasso embellished with Ottifants. Otto, who studied at the Hamburg Art Academy, is certainly an accomplished art connoisseur.
